Ragging - a form of teasing or commanding - can even be traced back in existance in 7th and 8th century A.D. In ancient Greece, new entrants in sporting community used to be treated in a harsh manner to develope a team spirit. With the passage of time, such peculiar technique started being practiced within some military forces and also in some educational Institutions.
In India ragging was imported alongside English Education and came into prominence after independence. Until the late 1960s, ragging was never a serious problem in any Indian educational institution. Gradually as education became more accessible, ragging emerged as an instrument to dominate the junior students by the seniors for satisfying their group ego.
Ragging can never be regarded as an academic expression or skill-lifting exercise or a traditional activity in any educational institution. It may be construed as heinous and ugly act and hence our college MIET not only discourages Ragging, but also bans with punitive measures, notified publicly. In this matter, we strictly adhere to the act “The West Bengal Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Act, 2000”
MIET College is a totally “ragging-free” Institute. The assortment of activities in academics and sports and other cultural activities encourage the flow of energy to retain a healthy and congenial environment. Not merely through official notices but also through various whole hearted activities, we have succeeded in preventing ragging in our institute. Recently we have conducted a large scale Seminar by inviting high profile guests from local administration - (SDO Sadar – Mr. Jolly Chowdhury), eminent educationist (Prof. Monaj Kumar Mitra), some media personalities, representatives from NGO and so on. Enthusiastic students, under the guidance of teachers, decorated the college with various anti-ragging posters to develope an Anti-Ragging creed among students. They even took oath to safeguard the aleady-existing fame of their college- as ragging free institution, while they would treat the newcomers as their loving brothers and sisters.
Though not a single incident of ragging has been registered till date in our college, Management is constant vigilent about it. An Anti-Ragging Committee and Anti-Ragging Squad had already been formed and are working effectively. The members of the Anti-Ragging Committee are as follows:
